The creation of the Doctoral Degree in Strategic Business Administration (Online) responds to the need to satisfy the demand of those who need to study a doctoral program in Administration, have hourly restrictions and / or face-to-face availability. It is the only one in the region accredited by The Association of MBA-DBA (AMBA) in the United Kingdom.

CENTRUM PUCP may make changes in the mesh, sequence of courses or teachers, according to its policy of continuous improvement. Failure to comply with the quorum required CENTRUM PUCP reserves the right to postpone the start of courses and programs.

The classes of the face-to-face teaching modules during the first two years are: Monday to Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. - 12 effective days
Online sessions:
Online classes are between Monday to Friday from 6:45 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. (6 days of synchronous class and 6 days of asynchronous classes per course). A total of 6 courses of the curriculum are developed in the virtual modality.

  • A graduate from the Doctoral Program in Strategic Business Administration shall act closely to the ethic and humanistic research of the University, with social commitment and responsibility
  • He or she as well has specialized knowledge about pure and applied research in business administration. Thus, he or she may generate sustainable value to his or her organization
  • The graduate will be able to critically analyze a scientific publication, assessing its methodological strengths and weaknesses and determining its contribution to knowledge thanks to said analysis
  • The graduate shall be able to generate knowledge through scientific research, and he or she will be able of divulging it through teaching and through the publication of journals catalogued and reviewed by his or her peers
  • The graduate shall also master two foreign language, one of which must be English
    • He or she will have intellectual leadership capacity in order to generate changes in administration science and technology, with an ethical, innovative, critical and socially committed attitude

COURSES OF THE PROGRAM

The program leads to obtaining the academic degree of Doctor in Strategic Business Administration, awarded by Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Additionally, participants that satisfactorily defend the first three chapters of their research proposal—after completing the courses of the first two years—will receive the Doctoral Candidature in Strategic Business Administration diploma.

In order to graduate, you must successfully pass the courses, your Research Proposal must be approved, and you must defend your doctoral thesis, which must be published through an academic paper in a specialized academic journal. Additionally, you must comply with foreign language requirements as set forth in the Program Standards Guide.

  • YEAR I

    • Epistemology and Research Ethics (Lima)
      The course analyzes the logic and ethics of knowledge. It aims to discuss and analyze the main paradigms of research and how they bring us close to knowledge, understanding and rationality. The course seeks for the doctoral student to be able to explain, criticize and defend—clearly and concisely—the philosophical positions in the discussion and development of his/her research during the doctoral program and his/her research career.
    • Research Proposal Seminar I (Lima)
      The course presents the main guidelines and regulatory standards that are useful to doctoral students, as guidelines to follow for proper presentation of their research projects, both for their thesis and for publication in specialized academic journals. The course introduces the doctoral student to the management of technological tools for finding specialized information and explains the APA format, BOLD software and the structure of the research proposal.
    • Modern Management Systems (Online)
      The course develops in the doctoral student a new way to visualize the management of complex organizations, emphasizing corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. With new trends, modern management systems that can cope successfully with new challenges should be centered on the essence of management: strengthening of the organizational culture.
    • Financial Systems (Online)
      The course presents the relation between strategic decisions and financial performance. It analyzes and goes in depth in the following topics: capital markets and valuation, capital budget, capital cost, cost structure, risk management with financial derivatives, growth worth, relation between financial policy and corporate strategy.
    • Qualitative Research Methodology I (Lima)
      The course prepares the doctoral student conceptually to structure and design a qualitative research project. Thus, the course presents various approaches and methods of data analysis that will be needed during and after the doctoral program. It allows discussion of topics of the presentation of research results for its publication in various media; and enables the discussion of the strategy, design and methods of qualitative research.
    • Quantitative Research Methodology I (Lima)
      The course presents the various quantitative and analytical tools that support the process of the doctoral student’s research during the program and in his professional career. It is intended that the participant is able to understand which methods are applicable to the problems in order to make the extension of his/her global business vision feasible.
    • Research Proposal Seminar II – Auto-study (MNL)
      Thesis Seminar: This course provides the doctoral student with the opportunity of defending the academic and doctoral character of his/her research proposal, both in its theoretical and methodological aspects, in pursuit to achieve the condition of doctoral candidate. This course aims to meet the following objectives: efficiently and effectively elaborate the research proposal in terms of available time and the rigorous and convincing communication of its content; defend the theoretical and methodological aspects of the doctoral research proposal, arguing its appropriateness and doctoral level; establish an academic dialogue between the doctoral student and the doctoral committee so as to establish the rigour of the arguments for and against, in benefit of the academic and doctoral level of the research proposal; and evaluate and qualify the defense of the research proposal in pursuit of to achieve the condition of doctoral candidate.
  • YEAR II

    • Organization Behavior Sciences (Online)
      The course aims to familiarize the doctoral student with the approaches for research in the behavioral sciences, since there is virtually no aspect of business or management research without a socio-psychological dimension. In the behavioral sciences, we can distinguish different levels of research. In this regard, the course looks at three of them: the level of the individual worker; the level of work, considering the career path; and the level of the organization. At the level of the individual worker, performance evaluation and the balance between home and work is analyzed; at the work level, research on employability and changes in the employment relationship is reviewed. Finally, at the level of the organization, organizational change, innovation and knowledge management are analyzed.
    • Industrial and Service Organizations (Online)
      The course enables theoretical and empirical examination of the problems emerging from the activities of industrial and service organizations. The course provides the necessary guidelines to analyze and develop an understanding of game theory, the theory of contracts and the principal agent theory as well as concepts underlying market structure and the behavior of organizations. Also, given the importance that emerging markets understanding of their own industries; the course includes topics on the formation of companies and the role of international corporations.
    • Strategic Marketing (Online)
      The course presents a global vision of marketing. It aims to present the state of the art in each of the important areas, and promote a critical analysis of observed matters as from three points of view: general point of view, the application of such matters to Latin-American countries, and the generation of ideas and methodologies for future research development.
    • Strategic Management and Leadership (Online)
      This course aims for the doctoral student to review strategic thinking throughout history, from classic strategy thinkers—mostly military—to most modern ones, who started to apply this thinking to the corporate world in the twentieth century. The course allows analyzing the main articles and their application to organizations that wish to plan for a long-term future. Furthermore, the course provides information about different methodologies for developing the strategic process, and shows that leadership and culture of organizations are fundamental to succeed in such process.
    • Qualitative Research Methodology II (Lima)
      The course strengthens doctoral student’s preparation to be able to structure and execute a qualitative research study. Thus, the focus of the course is the presentation and advanced use of qualitative techniques for collecting and analyzing data and allowing the doctoral student to progress towards meeting the requirements for publication and for the defense of the program’s doctoral thesis.
    • Quantitative Research Methodology II (Lima)
      The course allows a deepening of knowledge on the use of quantitative techniques. Doctoral students will be able to use advanced quantitative methods, using specialized technological tools such as Excel, SPSS, EVIEWS and online analysis websites.
  • YEAR III

    • Thesis Seminar I (CNL)
      Field investigation: The working module consists of a series of activities that will help the doctoral student in the design of the sample and systematic data collection to be used in his/her doctoral research. This module seeks to achieve the following objectives: to define specific population for the research study, to operatively define the terms to be used in the research, to review variables that will be measured, to establish the sampling frame, to design the sample, to prepare documents regarding the informed consent and confidentiality of information, and to apply data collection techniques.
    • Thesis Seminar II (MNL)
      Data Analysis: The working module consists of a series of activities that will help the doctoral student in the application of quantitative and qualitative techniques for the analysis of data in his doctoral thesis. This module seeks to achieve the following objectives: to perform exploratory data analysis, propose statistical hypotheses (in the quantitative case), select the techniques or procedures for data analysis, choose and apply the tools of data processing to obtain results (including selecting the right software or other tools), analyzing the results and proposing adjustments or reformulating the model (if necessary).This seminar comprises chapters I, II, III and IV of the Doctoral Dissertation, which are to be presented up to nine months after defending the Research Proposal.
  • YEAR IV

    • Thesis Seminar III (CNL)
      Thesis Writing: The working module allows the academic ordering of the results of the doctoral research and the writing of the conclusions generated in the work. This module seeks to achieve the following objectives: to structure a document of scientific rigor in order to transmit the findings of the investigation and ensure that the contribution to knowledge made by the doctoral student is at the level of international standards.
    • Thesis Seminar IV (CNL)
      Preparation for Thesis Defense: The working module enables the doctoral candidate to prepare and present the dissertation and defend his thesis before the Doctoral Jury of CENTRUM PUCP Business School in an illustrative, explanatory, convincing, concise and rigorous, intelligent, effective manner, and adjusted to the established time. This module seeks the following objective: to train doctoral student to be able to be admitted as a doctor, DBA, by the international academic community in the area of Strategic Business Administration.

INTERNATIONAL TRIPS

  • Once a year, in September, CENTRUM PUCP organizes the International Week (SI for its acronym in Spanish), in which researchers, doctors and PhDs present their latest projects. All students of the doctoral program are expected to actively participate in the SI. Additionally, during the year, renowned academic exhibitors visit our campus to give talks to our students.

*In order to opt for the academic degree of Doctor in Strategic Business Administration, awarded by the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, you must accredit two foreign languages. Advanced proficiency of English is required (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Level C1). Regarding the second language, an intermediate proficiency is required (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Level B2). For applicants whose native language is English, an advanced proficiency of another language is required (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Level C1), as well as an intermediate proficiency of a second foreign language (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Level B2).

Percy Marquina

Professor Percy Marquina holds a Doctor in Business Administration degree from Maastricht School of Management, the Netherlands, a Doctorate in Strategic Business Administration from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, a Master of Philosophy from Maastricht School of Management, the Netherlands, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Universidad del Pacífico, Peru, and an undergraduate degree in Economics from Universidad del Pacífico. Professor Marquina completed the Executive Development Program at Wharton School of Business, United States. He completed the Business Leadership Program at Getulio Vargas Foundation, Brazil, and the Colloquium on Participant Centered Learning program at Harvard Business School, United States. Professor Marquina has also pursued specialized course studies at the World Bank, the UNDP, and Wilson Learning.
